Thank You to Mayor Jim Schmitt,  Chad Fradette,  and all the others who are strong enough to fight for the Nativity. I was just watching the news and was thrilled. What king of idiots do we have in this city? Just because they are not Christian that we should not celebrate our National Holiday. Thats right Taku, it is a NATIONAL HOLIDAY. Are you going to fight that also. Do you fight getting a paid day off on Christmas, or Easter? How about all the other holidays? If Kwanzaa became a national holiday I would not expect the day off with pay. I sure as heck would not act like a fool and bring Christmas decorations to a Kwanzaa display just to get attention. Lets not forget about Arlington National Cemetery, did you notice all the crosses? Are you going to fight that just for more attention. After listening to you, I would not want any more attention thats for sure. I would be afraid to embarrass my parents. One last thing,,,,,God rules!!!!!!!

My belief is that the media gets too involved in it. If they left it alone is wouldn't be such an issue. A prime example is now that this has been such a promoted topic, Manitowoc is now dealing with it. If people want to have freedom of religion that is fine but the majority of people celebrate Christmas. I think the media has to pick and choose what is really important . There has not been any issues prior to this so now why? I would just like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and just remember that Jesus is the reason for the season.

The media gets too involved in alot of issues and make it out to be something more than it should.

I agree with the previous writer....God rules!!!

I like Christmas as much as the next, but baby Jesus, Marry and Joseph along with all those animals must go. I am in favor of separation of church and state. This controversy in Green Bay is extremely dumb. The ignorant guy, Council President Chad Fradette, decided to buy and put up a nativity scene in Green Bay. He then goes on to say he is expressing his freedom to religion. I say go expresses it on private land not on religiously diverse tax payers’ attended, public land. Green Bay's city hall, by allowing the nativity scene to stand is subliminally supporting Christianity. Not all of the constituent of Green Bay share in the same faith as Chad Fradette. He, as a Public figure, shouldn't endorse any form of religion on public grounds.

America is deeply influenced by John Locke. He said government derives its power from the citizens, thus, the citizens must relinquish some of their natural rights to the government. Locke argues for the separation of church and state. He argues that the government has no authority in the realm of an individual's conscience. Thomas Jefferson, who influenced the authors of the constitution, references the first amendment to the constitution in a letter to the Danbury Baptists in Connecticut about the separation of church and state (The Danbury Baptist were a minority in Connecticut and they felt that the legislative body was promoting a different way of worship). He stated in a correspondence to the Danbury Baptists, that the first amendment to the constitution protects them from the legislature in Connecticut, thus “buildin

“building a wall between church and state.”
Keep Jesus at home, and allow the public, not be subjugated by your religion.

Those opposing the nativity scene should be spending their time trying to convince the Federal Government to remove religious based holidays from the Federal Holiday list. Why do postal workers and the government close for Christmas and Easter, isn't that putting religion into government. I don't hear people complain about not being able to work on those holidays. To truly separate church and state, religious based holidays should be removed from the FEDERAL HOLIDAY lists. Children should have to go to school. I would not support that, but it would be the proper route for those complaining to take.

That is the only way that they will attain a true separation of Church and State. Until then, they need to quit complaining. Those going through all this trouble really need to find something more productive to do.

The issue with the Nativity scene is that is was done in spite, because Fradette was upset with a pending lawsuit in Peshtigo and decided to challenge a lawsuit to a "big" city.

The problem is that the city leaders are placing their personal agenda and ideas at the expense of taxpayers. The decide to cut ESSENTIAL services, claiming the city doesn't have enough money, but yet can afford to pay for lawsuits.

The city has received several lawsuits because of our city leaders actions, from Mayor Schmitt's "deals" with Washington Commons to now this. This lawsuit should be shoulder by Fradette, Schmitt, and everyone else who voted in favor and not at the expense of taxpayers. It is bad enough that the city can afford to pay lawsuits but not ESSENTIAL services and now put taxpayers safety in jeopardy.

Chad Fradette is one of the more outgoing aldermen in the area. I had the pleasure of working with him getting drug dealers out of our neighborhood as well as other trouble. I'm sure the Nativity was not done out of spite.

As far as Taku goes, I'm really embarrassed for her. Christmas is when we celebrate the birth of Christ. What exactly does the Wiccan wreath have to do with this? Please, find something better to do with your time and quit wasting everyone else's. If you are not a believer, look the other way. I am not hispanic, but you don't see me out there protesting Cinco de Mayo. Perhaps you would be happier living in the middle east where all they do is go to war because of religious beliefs. I'm with the rest....God rules!!!

I'm sure the Nativity was not done out of spite.

Really crazytimes, then if it wasn't done out of spite, how come Fradette wanted to challenge FFR to "pick on a big city" with a lawsuit?

The Nativity scene was put up BECAUSE of what happened in Peshtigo and it was AFTER the mayor of Peshtigo received a letter for a Natvity scene ALREADY displayed. Up until that point there was absolutely nothing religious displayed on city property.

It would have been one thing if the city had a similar policy in place like Peshtigo's and that there were options to display religious items, but it was all a challenge of a lawsuit. Had the city and Fradette minded their own business the debate would only be about Peshtigo. Now because of personal feelings, citizens lose services (K-9, etc) because of lack of funds, yet the city will use city funds to defend a frivilous lawsuit brought on because of spite.

This is alot more simple than we all think...

Like I said earlier, Christmas is a FEDERAL HOLIDAY! Thus meaning it is recognized as a holiday by the GOVERNMENT! Thus, the local government should be able to quietly represent what the holiday is based on. If people want a true separation of church and state, they should lobby the Federal Government to have religious holidays removed from the list of Federally recognized holidays first. Until then, local government should be allowed to have inanimate displays for the holiday.

Vipergal, you have said it all. I don't care if you believe in God, don't believe in God, or if you believe in nothing at all, the fact is people need to mind their own business. If the guy next door hangs up a Wiccan wreath are you gonna throw a fit about? Maybe, but it's his house, deal with it.

And Nick, gotta tell ya.. you believe we are on Earth because of God.. many people do not believe that.. and that's their choice.. what makes you think you are right? How do you know those other guys are not correct? I'm only pointing this out, because this is the problem, everyone thinks THEY are right.. but really everyone is right.. you believe what you believe. Pretty soon we're going to just like they are overseas and having wars right here in this great country.

Crazytimes, I love your example. If you're not Jewish, should you try and take away Hanukkah.. if you're not African American should you take away Kwanzaa?

I can't add much more than everyone has already said. A favorite CHRISTmas quote of mine seems appropriate:

"One who has no Christmas in their heart will never find Christmas under a tree."
~~ Roy L. Smith ~~

Let the special memories of Christmases past bring new joy and delight to your heart and the hearts of your loved ones this Christmas.

As already stated, there are religions that do not believe the same thing as you. Does that make them wrong and you right? Absolutely not. That is the problem with this controversy all together is that there is no give and take and little tolerance. There are those that do not believe in God, there are those believing in reincarnation, others who believe in nature, etc. To say get over it and deal with it is absolute nonsense and shows no tolerance.

The only ones who are right are the ones who allow for tolerance, meaning there is no religion better than another.

After all this nonsense for attention seekers int his city, I still applaud Mayor Jim Schmitt, Chad Fradette. I believe we should always be able to display the nativity as long as it is a national holiday. Until they make government workers and school teachers, students and everyone down to the street cleaners work on Dec 25. then we should be able to put up a display on government property. I do not stop Jewish people from displaying their signs on faith. And If their special day became a national holiday, I will not celebrate it because I am not Jewish, BUT I will not stand in their way if they choose to put up a display. All these people fighting now are just seeking their 15 minutes of fame. Remember Christians that we must forgive them for they know not what they do. I have a sister in law believes in Buddhism, but I do not ban her to the wood shed. She is loved just like everyone else. If she were to decorate her house with whatever they have then so be it. I am not going to act like a fool to make her take it down. We all have our beliefes and should be tolerant of each other. So if all the people want to display something that says "I am stupid and I want attention" so be it!!! So
Mayor Jim Schmitt, Chad Fradette. You got my vote whenever you run for office. Power of God be with you and your familys.
